CHAPTER 6
The next few days carried on without incident. Bryan had only managed to see Chrys once in that time, kept away by overtime and a date Laura insisted she could cancel, and Bryan made sure she kept. He’d spent a relatively quiet but interactive evening with Mickey, enjoying having him all to himself for a night.
Mickey had asked about Chrys at least five times, unable to remember to put shoes on before he went outside, yet relentless in his reminder of Bryan’s promise. Bryan had mentioned it to Chrys again when he went over to watch the game on Thursday night, and he’d been downright excited to see his godson.
When Saturday rolled around, Bryan was a nervous wreck. It had been two days since he’d seen Chrys, and though it was unconscionable to accept, he missed his partner—he just plain missed Chrys. Laura had eased off her relentless urging for love to conquer all, even going as far as reminding him the right moment would eventually come around. She knew all his secrets and it annoyed the hell out of him.
Bryan had always catalogued his life in terms of moments — right moments, wrong moments, perfect moments. He had the reputation of being tough and compassionate, resourceful and approachable, loyal to a fault, rough and ready when needed. But hidden inside the rugged, thick-brained exterior was a sentimental side as big as the sun, and almost as bright. He believed in moments that defined themselves, tiny sections of time that were made specifically for one event in his life.
He also believed love was forever, or at least he had until he fell out of love with his wife. Chrys represented a second chance that Bryan wanted to grab onto, but at the same time scared the ever-loving crap out of him. And the fact that the perfect time hadn’t popped up so he could confess his feelings to Chrys pissed him off more than he wanted to admit, even to himself.
But instead of dwelling on it, Bryan concentrated on Mickey’s visit with his godfather. He talked to his son beforehand, telling him Uncle Chrys was still getting better so they had to be gentle with him. He nodded and promised that he understood, but the moment Chrys opened the door, Mickey flew into his arms.
“Mickey,” Bryan hissed as his son clung to Chrys like a spider monkey, arms and legs wrapped tightly around him.
“Hey, buddy. It’s great to see you,” Chrys said with a groan. His good arm held Mickey to him but he wobbled slightly and his face was ashen. “It’s okay, Bry. Just get us over to the couch before we both fall on our butts.”
Bryan did as he was instructed, guiding Chrys to the sofa as Mickey talked a mile a minute about anything and everything. Despite his pale appearance, Chrys’ eyes sparked with a familiar happiness that had been missing since the accident. He’d always shown so much love and appreciation for Mickey, and never had it been more apparent in Bryan’s mind.
